Dr Shamala completed her Masters in Ophthalmology in UKM and subsequently completed a fellowship program in Cornea and External Eye Diseases at Flinders Medical Centre, Australia in 2001. She has had 34 years of working experience, of which she has been working as an Ophthalmologist for the past 27 years and as a corneal subspecialist since the past 24 years. Until the end of 2024 she held the position of Head of Department and Senior Consultant Ophthalmologist working at Hospital Sungai Buloh for 15 years and played a major role in setting up the national corneal centre centre and eye Bank there. Recently, she began working at Taylor’s University and continues to contribute to clinical work at Hospital Sungai Buloh as an Ophthalmologist.
Being recognized for her work as a corneal sub-specialist, she is frequently invited to ophthalmology conferences and meetings to present on matters of the cornea and external eye diseases and to participate in expert panel discussions, chairperson, moderator or trainer of sessions at meetings. She also continues contributes her expertise to sub committees under the Malaysian Medical Council, National Transplant Registry and in the Malaysian Cell and Tissue Banking committee. She enjoys teaching and participates in the teaching of undergraduates, postgraduates, corneal fellows and as examiner for examinations.
