Matthew Simunovic MB BChir (Dist., Cantab.) PhD (Cantab.) FRANZCO is Professor of Ophthalmology & Visual Science at the University of Sydney and a Senior Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at Sydney Eye Hospital and the Sydney Children's Hospitals Network. He completed his medical degree (graduating with distinction) and PhD (visual neuroscience) at the University of Cambridge. Prof. Simunovic subsequently undertook ophthalmology training at Sydney Eye Hospital and retinal fellowship training at the University of British Columbia, Moorfields Eye Hospital, London and Oxford Eye Hospital/University of Oxford. Prof. Simunovic is director of the vitreoretinal fellowship program at Sydney Eye Hospital and is a director and chair of the research committee of the Sydney Eye Hospital Foundation. Additionally, he serves on the board and scientific review committee of Australian Vision Research and the Research Standing Committee of the Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology. He is a steering committee member of the ANZSRS Surgical Registry and is the Principal Investigator of the Fight Inherited Retinal Blindness! Registry. In 2018, he was elected to the Macula Society and in 2020 he was the first vitreoretinal surgeon to deliver approved gene therapy in the Southern Hemisphere. Prof. Simunovic's research spans from laboratory investigations through to clinical trials and focuses on emerging treatments for retinal diseases, experimental vitreoretinal surgery and visual psychophysics. He has received major funding support locally and internationally from the National Health and Medical Research Council, the Medical Research Future Fund, the Macula Disease Foundation Australia, Foundation Fighting Blindness (USA) and the Macula Society (USA).
